The Powerpoint of Positive Thinking

A smidgen of video to demonstrate the Ashley Holt Method

Here’s a little slideshow I threw together for an exhibit of my scribblings at Limestone University in 2021. This came to mind with the recent news that Limestone may soon be closing its campus forever. (Yet another supporter of my artwork I’ve left smoldering in my wake.)

It occurs to me that the multi-sketch method demonstrated in this little A/V presentation may give the impression that I’m working much harder than I actually am. Given my solemn vow of sloth, I would never want to mislead anyone in this regard. There are numerous preparatory sketches involved in every drawing I produce, it’s true. But my experience is that the process, once I am fully awake, moves fairly quickly. Refining and reshaping my initial doodles through various sketch stages is all in service of the illusion that I knew what I was doing all along.

But please don’t confuse this fussiness with hard work. I assure you that I am as opposed to excess effort as my beatnik forefathers and all the other noble slackers and goldbrickers of human history.

Because the video was to run continually in the exhibit hall, I included lots of little gag slides to pep up the entertainment value. And so, of course, thanks to technical issues, the video was never shown.

Thanks to jazzman James Slater for once again providing the soundtrack to my internet presence.

(And let’s not forget Ashley’s website, jam-packed with portraits and other drawings, his illustrated rant column, The Symptoms, his highly-affordable prints and books currently available, his eagerness for your portrait commission, and his contact email, thrdgll@gmail.com, where he longs to hear from you.)
